Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: UNESCO Recognition for Jeju Stone Culture
  • Traditional Jeju life is in many ways inseparable from the island’s stone culture, and that’s why the provincial government is seeking UNESCO recognition for it. Here’s Mike Laidman to explain. Report Jeju’s (밭담) batdam - the stone walls that snake around so many farms on the island - have endured harsh winds for more than 1,000 years. [Slug] Jeju stone culture: walls, towers, kilns, beacons The Jeju people of old piled up stones into towers in order to protect themselves from bad luck. These towers are known as ‘bangsatap.’ Basalt kilns were used to bake roof tiles and pottery. Finally, stone beacons, or watchtowers, were built to pass military messages by smoke or else via fire at night. These remains all form part of the stone culture heritage shared by the Jeju people. [Slug] Stone culture reflects Jeju way of life The island's stone culture reflects the way of life of the people here. But these cultural assets are being neglected by modern islanders, and even destroyed as new projects are launched and development inevitably happens. INTERVIEW Gang Jeong-hyo / Director, Jeju Artists Federation The everyday lives of Jeju people and the island’s stone culture are inseparable; but we no longer realize the value of that culture because stones are everywhere. [Slug] Limited number of stone cultural assets being maintained Only 192 stone cultural assets are listed and maintained as part of Jeju’s national or provincial heritage, which means a huge number of remaining stone assets are being neglected. But now, beginning this year, the province is gearing up to provide the proper level of preservation. [Slug] Officials seeking UNESCO recognition for island’s stone culture Jeju is attempting to add its stone culture to UNESCO. It will also make an application for cultural heritage candidacy to the Cultural Heritage Administration this year. [Slug] Research concludes on Pico Island, Portugal and Bigeumdo, Korea Researchers have finished a comparative study on stone culture on Pico Island in Portugal and on (비금도) Bigeumdo Island, Korea. They investigated each island's stone cultural assets and drew up a distribution map. Experts believe that Jeju has a better chance of winning a world heritage title if the province chooses an area rich in stone cultural assets instead of individual remains when it applies. INTERVIEW Han Hyeong-cheol / Jeju World Natural Heritage Center We'll select a unique landscape that showcases our stone culture and its value as a candidate for application to the Cultural Heritage Administration. [slug] ‘Challenging road ahead’ The road ahead to candidacy to the Cultural Heritage Administration and UNESCO will be tough. Jeju will also be competing with many international rivals. Experts say, however, that the UNESCO inclusion of the island’s stone culture is essential to better preservation and management. INTERVIEW Gang Seung-jin / Jeju Batdam Management Institute If stone culture is added to UNESCO it could be better maintained and preserved. [Camera] Park Byeong-joon [Reporter] Mike Laidman 2018 will be a crucial year for the potential inclusion of Jeju’s stone culture on the UNESCO list, and many hope the culture will follow in the footsteps of the haenyeo being named to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. Report [slug] ‘Baby in the Springtime’ A naked baby chases a yellow butterfly against a warm, cozy background - no harsh winds, and no scorching heat, either. 60 years ago, during the Korean War, Lee Jung-seob chose not to forgo his painting. His soul never ceased to burn with passion for art. Following the ceasefire agreement between the two Koreas, Lee held a private exhibition in January, 1955 at the gallery in the (미도파) Midopa Department Store in Seoul. Some sources say he displayed 32 works of art, and others say 45. What would an exhibition like his have been like during such a harsh time?
