Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Five-day Markets)
  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at Jeju’s five-day markets, which offer fresh, inexpensive produce as well as the personalized service that regular customers have come to appreciate. [Report] When it comes to shopping on Jeju, you could say we’re spoiled for choice. Big supermarket chains, smaller farm co-ops, even citizen organized flea markets are common. But there’s a kind of market here which offers up both fresh ingredients and personalized service which are second-to-none. [Slug CG] Fresh local produce at competitive prices Jeju’s five-day markets are found all over the island and have a wide selection of local produce, fruits, fish, Jeju black pork, and more. Often prices are negotiable, or if not, the merchant may choose to add a little extra to your shopping bag. [Slug CG] Purchases can be sent to mainland directly from market Many visitors to Jeju also shop at the island’s five-day markets, buying in bulk for themselves or for Jeju gifts to give to friends and family back on the mainland. They can use a delivery service to send home boxes of mandarin oranges, for example, or dried sea bream, a Jeju delicacy. And speaking of delicious food, there are plenty of food stalls located around the markets which sell piping hot soups and other hearty dishes and traditional snacks. [Slug CG] Island’s largest market is in Dodu-dong, Jeju City The largest of the five-day markets is in Jeju City. Over the years it has grown and relocated a number of times, but since 1998 it has operated in Dodu-dong with over 1,000 stalls. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker These days the markets are catering to overseas visitors as well, with signage in languages like English and Chinese. What better way to get a sense of the real Jeju than in the hustle and bustle of the island’s traditional style of shopping. Todd Thacker KCTV

  • Firefighters not equipped to handle blazes in high-rise buildings
  • Firefighters not equipped to handle blazes in high-rise buildings Local fire department will get aerial ladder truck, helicopter next year Analysts say fires pose a greater risk to local buildings with 15 or more floors. A Tuesday safety seminar brought together representatives from the public, the government, and academia. Representatives from the Jeju fire department said that firefighters would struggle to extinguish fires and save lives from high-rises because the ladder trucks on the island don’t reach high enough. There are 51 buildings with at least 15 floors in Jeju. The fire department will therefore introduce an aerial ladder truck capable of reaching a height of 70 meters as well as a firefighting helicopter next year.

  • ‘Site feasibility study for 2nd airport will be redone’
  • ‘Site feasibility study for 2nd airport will be redone’ Transport ministry bows to public pressure The transport ministry has decided to redo both a basic plan and a site feasibility study for the island’s second airport. Ministry representatives say the decision was based on the urgency of the project and an acceptance of the opposition to it. They did not accede to opponents’ demand to speed up the feasibility study. They said there was no funding for it now, and that it would take two to three months to receive it. The ministry said it would therefore proceed in accordance with the original plan. Ministry representatives say they will ask area residents to sit on an assessment committee for the project in order to ensure maximum local participation and transparency in the process. • Rising Cybersecurity Threats
  • The fourth industrial revolution is characterized by internet-connected devices, the so-called Internet of Things. While the benefits of such developments may be mind boggling, analysts say, so too are the risks. A recent conference in Jeju aimed to increase awareness about the need for rock-solid cybersecurity.
