Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

The office will offer information and opportunities to local firms that want to sell in Japan.   • Crackdown on waste disposal after Chuseok \100,000 fine for first offenders Jeju City authorities will begin after the upcoming holidays fining people who violate new waste disposal rules. The city is hiring 170 people to monitor areas where rule-breaking is rampant. They will begin the crackdown October 10th. Violators will be fined 100,000 won for bringing out waste or recyclables on the wrong day, mixing allowed with non-allowed waste, or disposing of waste or recyclables outside the designated time period. A second violation will mean a 200,000-won fine, and a third, a 300,000-won penalty. 추석연휴 이후 요일별 배출제 단속 추석연휴가 끝나는 다음달 10일부터 재활용품 요일별 배출제를 위반할 경우 과태료가 부과됩니다. 제주시는 이에따라 생활쓰레기 무단투기 취약지를 중심으로 단속 보조원 170여 명을 채용해 집중 단속에 나설 계획이라고 밝혔습니다. 이에따라 요일별 배출품목이 아니거나 혼합해 배출할 경우, 배출시간을 지키지 않다 적발될 경우 10만원의 과태료가 부과됩니다. 이어 재차 적발될 경우 20만원, 3번째는 30만원의 과태료가 부과됩니다.

  • 150,000 holiday visitors to come by ferry 66% more than last year About 150,000 people will come to the island by ferry over the upcoming Chuseok holidays. There are 13 vessels on the eight ferry routes that originate in Jeju. According to the Jeju branch of the Korea Ship Safety and Technology Authority, they will make a combined 550 sailings between September 29th and October 9th. The passenger count is expected to climb 66 percent compared to last year, when about 90,000 people came by sea. In addition to this summer’s poorly-received King Arthur adaptation, Charlie Hunnam also starred in a much better movie - The Lost City of Z. And taking his own adventure in the modern world is Ben Stiller, in Brad’s Status. Let’s jump straight in this week. So here we go... [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] The Lost City of Z (2017, James Gray) A true-life drama about British explorer Percival Fawcett. The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as "savages," the determined Fawcett - supported by his devoted wife , son, and aide-de-camp - returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. An epically scaled tale of courage and passion, The Lost City of Z is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and a conflicted adventurer driven to the verge of obsession. It’s an epic with a stately pace, sweeping vistas, and a top-notch performance by Hunnam, who portrays Fawcett’s bravery, spirit, and sometimes reckless behaviour to a T. This large-scale adventure yarn contains everything you’d expect a jungle adventure movie to, but it does it with visual splendour, a riveting narrative, and real heart. [Slug CG] Brad’s Status (2017, Mike White) A father meets an old friend and debates his life's choices. When Brad Sloan accompanies his college bound son to the East Coast, the visit triggers a crisis of confidence. Brad has a satisfying career and a comfortable life, but it's not quite what he imagined during his college glory days. Showing his son around Boston, he can't help comparing his life with those of his four best college friends. As he imagines their wealthy, glamorous lives, he wonders if this is all he will ever amount to. But when circumstances force him to reconnect with his former friends, Brad begins to question whether he has really failed or is, in some ways at least, the most successful of them all. Brad’s Status manages to find insightful observations to transcend its familiar premise, and stars Ben Stiller and Austin Abrams have excellent interplay. Stiller is a master of playing the self-conscious neurotic, but here it’s more subtle than ever, achieving a nuance that’s something of a first. It’s the father-son relationship that we explore as we move through the college tropes that really brings the meat to the story, and the movie as a whole stays like its two main characters - gently, human, and unresolved.

The Jeju Provincial Tourism Association puts the projected total between September 29th and October 9th at 518,000. It says 497,000 will be domestic tourists, while the remaining 21,000 will be visitors from abroad. Jeju Air surveyed 552 passengers between August 7th and 11th. 50.2 percent of respondents said they had bought the tickets without a definite plan when the urge struck. That’s almost twice the 29.2 percent of self-reporting impulse travelers in February. 53.3 percent of the summer flyers thought the upcoming holidays were a different situation, though - they planned ahead to buy tickets for that period. 제주항공 승객 2명 중 1명 '즉흥여행' 여행 욕구가 생기면 항공권 구매부터 하는 이른바 '즉흥여행'이 빠르게 늘고 있습니다. 제주항공이 지난달 7일부터 11일까지 5일동안 기내에 탑승한 승객 552명을 대상으로 설문조사 한 결과 응답자의 50.2%가 떠나고 싶을 때 계획 없이 항공권을 구입한다고 응답했습니다. 이같은 수치는 같은 주제로 설문조사를 진행했던 지난 2월 응답률 29.2%보다 갑절가까이 증가한 것입니다. 반면 전통적인 휴가철에는 미리 여행계획을 세우고 항공권을 구입하는 비중이 53.3%로 나타났습니다.

  • Province makes \700b in loans available to SMEs Funds to stabilize operations at struggling companies The provincial government has set aside 700 billion won to help stabilize operations at struggling small and mid-sized enterprises. In the first eight months of the year, it lent out some 8,000 loans worth a total of 470 billion won. It plans to lend out another 230 billion won through the end of the year. The province is providing the aid to about 40 companies, which have been categorized by business type. In addition to the loans themselves, they are offered priority in getting them and a lowered interest rate as well as an exemption from the early payoff fee.
