Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV: Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. The Oscar nominations were announced just this past week, and that means that some of the big nominees are going to be seeing a jump in attendance. While last week’s The Revenant led the nominations, The Big Short, our first movie of the week, was right up there with five nominations, including Best Picture. Also this week is Steve Jobs, the second of two films to be released over the past couple years following the death of the iconic Apple co-founder. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] The Big Short (2015, Adam McKay) Four people take on the big banks for their greed. The Big Short is a movie about finance, which might put some people off. However, it approaches this serious, complicated subject with an impressive attention to detail -- and manages to deliver a well-acted, scathingly funny indictment of its real-life villains in the process. In the mid-2000s, four denizens of the world of high-finance predict the credit and housing bubble collapse, and decide to take on the big banks for their greed and lack of foresight. The movie has won accolades for both its cast and humour. With a cast that includes Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, and Ryan Gosling, the acting is solid throughout. But the dark, acidic humour might catch audiences by surprise. Financial jargon is made accessible, and the pure entertainment value for adults makes this a movie not to be missed. [Slug CG] Steve Jobs (2015, Danny Boyle) A look backstage as three Apple products are launched. In Steve Jobs, Michael Fassbender stars as the titular character, a man who needs no introduction. The movie takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. A great cast, a solid script, and a well-focused storyline are the features of this interpretation of Jobs’ life. It’s neither a pure biopic, nor pure entertainment, but still successfully straddles the line between the two. It never quite found it’s audience when it first opened overseas, so it will be interesting to see how it performs here. Audiences might be weary of Jobs-films; Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher, was released in 2013 to poor reviews. There’s no doubt that this more recent version is overall the better film, but sometimes it takes more than that.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Carrot Crop)
  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at some Jeju’s carrot industry. Despite supplying Korea with over 60% of its carrots, farmers here have increasingly had trouble with overproduction and wildly fluctuating prices. We’re into January now and transitioning from one orange-colored Jeju crop -- the mandarin orange -- to another... one that is hearty, nutritious, and served on nearly every table in Korea. This is none other than the island’s carrot crop, which is now being dug from Jeju fields, cleaned, boxed up and shipped all over the mainland and exported on a limited scale to Japan. [Slug CG] 60% of nation’s carrots produced in Jeju Though we first think of the tourism industry, the island is indeed a predominantly rural part of the nation. According to provincial government statistics, over 60 percent of Korea’s carrots are grown here. In fact, Jeju farming households make about 20 percent more than the national average -- about 36 million won annually. [Slug CG] Considered a winter ‘superfood’ for its nutrients, fiber Carrots, sweet potatoes and winter squash are all rich in vitamins and fiber. The carrot, for example, is considered something of a winter “superfood” in that it supplies vitamin C, B and A, beta-carotene and antioxidants. Eating such vegetables can help you boost your immune system and stave off a winter cold or infection. However, not everything is rosy when it comes to the day to day for local carrot farmers. Carrots are a rather labor-intensive crop, one which requires manual seeding, weeding and harvesting -- all slow, backbreaking work. [Slug CG] Problems include oversupply, razor thin profit margins Problems with profitability and oversupply regularly come to the fore. The local government and farmers’ unions have stepped in with financial help and special purchasing deals. But many have switched from carrot production to other crops that are less prone to such volatile fluctuations, like beans and barley. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker For now, though, carrots are a major crop for a good number of Jeju’s farmers and retailers, and offer all Koreans a tasty, homegrown source of nutrients that play an important role in the health of the nation.
