Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • COVID-19 Beds at Capacity
  • As the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is growing in Jeju, the negative pressure room occupancy rate has reached the ceiling. All of the nine rooms at the Jeju National University Hospital are in use, and the hospital is at full capacity for COVID-19 treatment. The province has added more beds at the Seogwipo Medical Center and will also be categorizing patients into mild and serious cases. Todd Thacker reports. On Jeju Island, COVID-19 patients are taken to negative pressure rooms at Jeju National University Hospital. But two recent cases stemming from an outbreak at a guest house in (남원읍) Namwon-eup have been isolated and treated at Seogwipo Medical Center. All nine of the negative pressure rooms at Jeju National University Hospital are now in use after a recent surge in COVID-19 patients. The province says that the COVID-19 patients in Namwon-eup were taken to negative pressure rooms at Seogwipo Medical Center given its closer location and fact that JNU Hospital is at capacity. INTERVIEW Bae Jong-myon / Representative, Jeju Province The occupancy rate of the negative pressure rooms at JNU Hospital is reaching its limit. Therefore, we directed the patients to Seogwipo Medical Center. The number of the confirmed cases has soared over the last few weeks. And now the island is running out of negative pressure rooms. A plan is in place for the province to add 22 more negative pressure rooms at JNU Hospital and 14 more at Seogwipo Medical Center. The addition of negative pressure rooms at Jeju Medical Center is under discussion as well. Once the planned additions are made, the province will separate patients into two groups: patients with mild symptoms and serious cases where the patient may require intensive care. Patients aged 65 and above and those with underlying illnesses will be classified as serious cases and taken to the JNU Hospital. Younger patients and asymptomatic patients will be taken to Seogwipo Medical Center or Jeju Medical Center. If the daily number of confirmed cases exceeds 50, the province will open a treatment center for up to 300 mild cases. This means that the severity of symptoms will determine which facility a patient is taken to. Provincial officials added that as of now there are no plans to displace regular hospital patients and convert 370 hospital beds into specialized COVID-19 treatment wards. Todd Thacker, KCTV

  • Fears allayed over low salinity water from China
  • 3. Fears allayed over low salinity water from China Jeju’s waters salinity levels normalize after Typhoon Bavi Due to the impact of Typhoon Bavi, fears over low salinity water from China entering the waters of Jeju, which was expected at the end of August, have been allayed. The Jeju Ocean and Fisheries Institute predicted that the low salinity water from the East China Sea would ride the south wind and flow into Jeju’s waters at the end of August. However, as Typhoon Bavi passed through, the low salinity water was mixed with the sea water, normalizing the salinity. The Institute plans to conduct testing in the near future in order to analyze the changes in the water with more precision. Currently, Jeju’s seas have a salinity level of 30psu and low salinity water has not been observed. However, high temperatures of over 30 degrees continue along the coast of Jeju Island. 3.
