A large-scale lawsuit over a personal data breach at Coupang has been launched in Jeju. With more than 1,500 plaintiffs?far exceeding initial expectations?momentum is also building for further legal action.

Lawyers representing Jeju residents affected by the Coupang personal data breach are submitting a complaint to the court.
This marks the largest consumer class-action lawsuit related to a personal data breach ever filed in Jeju.

Number of Jeju plaintiffs: 1,527 (initial estimate: 1,000)
Teens?20s: 127 (8.3%)
30s?50s and older: 1,271 (83.3%)
60s+: 129 (8.4%)
A total of 1,527 residents joined the lawsuit, far surpassing the originally planned cap of 1,000 participants recruited on a first-come, first-served basis, reflecting strong public interest.
People in their 30s to 50s made up the largest group at 83%, but participants span all age groups, from teenagers to those in their 70s and 80s.

With everything already feeling uncertain, I peel off and throw away address labels whenever a Coupang package arrives. If you’re told your address or personal information may have been leaked, anyone would feel anxious. I heard a law firm was organizing a lawsuit, so I decided to join.

Based on past personal data breach cases, the claim amount was set at 200,000 won per person, with an additional annual interest rate of 12%.
The plaintiffs described the incident as a betrayal of trust toward Jeju residents.

They argued that the defendant?who bears absolute and unlimited responsibility for protecting sensitive personal information?caused an unprecedented data leak affecting more than 33 million victims nationwide.

They further claimed that the company failed to recognize the breach for five months and consistently tried to downplay the situation, thereby intensifying victims’ mental suffering and humiliation.
The plaintiffs urged the court to make a swift ruling, emphasizing that Jeju’s regional characteristics have amplified the shock and damage caused by the incident.

Meanwhile, in Jeju, an additional 700 residents affected by the data breach have announced plans to file follow-up lawsuits after this first round, suggesting that both participation and the overall scale of litigation will continue to grow.

개인정보 유출 피해 사건 가운데
제주 최대 규모의 소비자 집단 소송이 시작됐습니다.
소송에 참여한 도민은 1천 527명으로
당초 선착순으로 모집하려던
1천 명을 훌쩍 넘는 등 높은 관심을 보였습니다.
30대부터 50대까지가 83%로 가장 많았고,
10대와 70대, 80대까지 모든 연령대에서 소송에 참여했습니다.

연 12% 가산 이자를 추가했습니다.
