Authorities believe that narcotics found in packages along the Jeju coastline last year were likely carried in by ocean currents.

The Jeju Coast Guard, working in coordination with Taiwanese investigative authorities, confirmed that in early July last year, 140 kilograms of ketamine disguised as tea were found drifting in waters off Taiwan’s west coast.

Authorities say the packaging and type are the same as those found in Jeju, beginning with the discovery along Seongsan Sinyang (성산 신양) Beach last September.

The Coast Guard says the ketamine drifting off Taiwan was likely carried by ocean currents to Jeju, though no trafficking group has yet been identified.

The Coast Guard reports that a total of 34 kilograms of ketamine were recovered along the Jeju coastline. Meanwhile, since the last discovery on Udo Island last month, there have been no further findings or signs of distribution.

대만 수사당국과 공조 수사를 진행해
지난해 7월 초 대만 서부 해역에서
녹색과 은색 차 포장지로 위장된 채 표류하던
케타민 140kg이 발견된 사실을 확인했습니다.

이는 지난해 9월, 성산 신양 해안을 시작으로
제주에서 발견된 것과 포장 형태와 종류 등이 같은 것으로 파악됐습니다.

이에 따라 해경은 마약 유통 조직을 특정할 단서는 발견되지 않았지만 대만 해상에서 표류하던 케타민이 해류를 타고 제주까지 유입됐을 가능성에 무게를 두고 있습니다.

한편, 해경이 합동 수색을 벌여 제주 해안에서 수거한 케타민은 모두 34kg으로 지난달 9일 우도를 마지막으로 추가 발견되거나 유통 정황은 없는 것으로 보고 있습니다.
