Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Jeju Warns of Winter Heating Fire Risks
  • As winter approaches, there is a growing need for caution against the increased risk of fires caused by heating equipment. According to the Jeju Fire Department, in the past three years in Jeju, there have been 73 fires related to heating equipment. These incidents have resulted in 4 casualties and caused property damage amounting to 500 million won. The most common were electric heating equipment fires, accounting for 27 incidents, followed by 21 cases of wood-fired boiler fires, and 15 cases of domestic boiler fires. The causes of these fires were primarily due to negligence (53%), electrical factors (23%), and gas leaks (4%). The Fire Department noted that 46 cases, which is 64% of heating equipment fires occurred during the winter months of December through February. The Province has formed a joint inspection team to conduct crackdowns, targeting habitual offenders distributing non-commercial mandarins and major wholesale markets across the country. So far, the inspections have resulted in 86 cases being identified, with fines imposed in 11 of these cases.   • Jeju Expands Infertility Aid for 2024
  • To address the low birthrate issue, support for infertility treatments will be expanded starting next year. The Province has recently completed procedures with the Ministry of Health and Welfare's social security consultation and announced that it will expand policies related to infertility treatment from next year. Over the past two months, the number of reports increased by 20 percent compared to the same period last year, and apprehensions also increased by 12 percent. This increase is attributed to the influence of the nation's only “Drunk Driving Reporting Reward System.” Since last September in Jeju, reporting a drunk driver has resulted in a reward of 50,000 won for revocation-level offenses and 30,000 won for suspension-level offenses.   • Jeju POE Recruits for Humans Rights Body
  • The Jeju Provincial Office of Education is publicly recruiting students to participate in the Student Human Rights Participation Committee, a body for discussing measures to enhance students' rights. This recruitment is open to students in grades 4 to 10, from elementary through high school, who are currently enrolled in schools within the province.   • Police Probe for Unregistered Births
  • Police have initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of children who were born but have no record of birth registration. Seogwipo and Jeju City district administrations have recently requested a police investigation, stating that they are unable to determine the whereabouts of 12 children born between 2010 and 2014. These children have not been registered at birth and therefore do not have national identification numbers. The police suspect that some of these children might have been adopted internationally. They intend to conduct investigations by interviewing the parents and other relatives.
