Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Seogwipo to use aerial drone for land surveys
  • Seogwipo to use aerial drone for land surveys City to survey nearly 1,000 plots in Wollabong region For the first time, Seogwipo will use an aerial drone to clarify land borders that are marked on historic registration maps drawn up during the Japanese colonial period. The municipal government says it will use a drone to survey 990 plots of land in the Wollabong (월라봉) region, stretching across Sanghyo-dong (상효동) and Shinhyo-dong (신효동). This is expected to yield clear images to replace the blurry ones from previous surveys conducted by satellite and airplane. Seogwipo officials say they hope to utilize drones for other projects in the future, as they are capable of taking accurate, high-definition images in a relatively short amount of time.

Will that make cash obsolete? And where does Korea stand in the mix? Hwang Ji-hye (황지혜) has the details. Report [CG IN] European nations moving to become cashless societies Digital transactions are quickly replacing cash in Sweden, where even street vendors carry card readers.
