Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • 2. Province removes statues from 4·3 massacre site Location’s name will change back to ‘Doryeong Maru’ The provincial government removed two Haetae statues from “Haetae Dongsan” to rename the hills back to its original local name “Doryeong Maru”. The Jeju Municipal Office relocated the statues to the entrance gates of a fire training center located at (산천단)Sancheondan, Jeju City. Doryeong Maru is one of the massacre sites of Jeju’s tragic April 3rd Incident, with more than 60 innocents killed. The statues of the mythical unicorn-lion with omniscient powers were placed at “Doryeong Maru” by Haitai Confectionery & Foods in the 1970s. It was a social taboo to mention the April 3rd Incident back then and the name of hills became “Haetae Dongsan”. 4·3 학살터 도령마루 '해태상' 철거 제주 4·3의 아픈 역사 현장인 제주시 용담동 도령마루에 세워져 있던 해태상이 철거됐습니다.

Over a decade ago, then President Roh Moo-hyun launched a project to develop so-called “Innovative Cities” across the nation as part of a balanced development policy. A recent research conducted by the land ministry indicated that the clusters in the innovation district showed a very low occupancy rate of only 5.3 percent last month, marking the lowest in the nation. This rate was even without any private companies moving from the mainland. Only the (대륜동)Daeryundong Community Center and the Seogwipo Fire department have recently relocated into this area. The land ministry said that high relocation costs and economic contraction in the real estate market are the push factors.
