Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • 1. 53% fewer international flights last year at Jeju International Airport 4.9% more domestic flights The Jeju airport handled far fewer international flights last year, when the number of Chinese arrivals plummeted. The transport ministry says it handled 53 percent fewer international flights compared to 2016. On the other hand, the number of domestic flights was up 4.9 percent, due to more Koreans visiting the island. The ministry says passenger traffic will continue to grow in the coming years.   • Last year, on a trial basis, some local schools used video linkups to connect their classrooms with those in Australia. Participants on both ends raved about the program, so this year local officials plan to expand it. Mike Balfour reports. Report [slug] Nabeup Elementary School in Jeju City In an English class of 5th graders in an elementary school in Jeju City, these young students are talking about their school life in front of a screen with students in Australia. [이팩트] "매년 하는데 지난해는 9월 9일에 말 타기같은 다양한 놀이의 수업을 했어요." [Effect] We’ve been doing it every year. Last year on September 9th, we did a number of fun classes together, like horseback riding. [slug] Video linkups connect classrooms in Jeju and Australia Since last year, the provincial office of education and an Australian school have worked together to connect the students of both countries. Different from online video lectures, they use cameras and big screens to communicate in real time. The students ask questions and answer freely, which encourages the children to participate more in the classes. Schools will focus on information technology education to prepare for the fourth industrial revolution which is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres. IT related subjects have been optional. But they will be mandatory for elementary grades 5 and 6 and middle schools. 53 local schools will provide intensive software classes and IT related student club activities and festivals will be encouraged. Woodang Library publishes ‘Wailing History of Jeju Samda’ Critics credit book for its ‘accessibility’ Jeju Woodang Library has published a history of the island called “The Wailing History of Jeju Samda.” Author (한동구) Han Dong-gu is a first-generation Korean-Japanese from Jeju. His book describes the formation of the island and how its people created Jeju’s unique history and culture. Critics have given the book a “thumbs up,” saying it eschews detailed historical minutia and difficult terms in favor of a simple style that anyone can enjoy. 우당도서관 '제주도 삼다의 통곡사' 발간 제주우당도서관이 제주도의 역사와 풍토를 기록한 '제주도 삼다의 통곡사'를 발간했습니다. 재일제주인 1세대인 한동구씨가 쓴 이 책은 오랜 세월동안 제주도가 형성된 과정과 도민들이 어떻게 제주도 역사를 만들어왔는지 기술하고 있습니다. 또 전문적인 역사적 고증이나 어려운 표현 대신 누구나 쉽게 읽을 수 있도록 쓰인 역사문화서라는 평가를 받고 있습니다.

Chusa Memorial Hall weekend visitors top 1,000 daily Chusa Kim Jeong-hui was a calligrapher exiled to Jeju in 1840s Recently, more than one thousand people are visiting Chusa Memorial Hall in Daejeong-eup every Saturday and every Sunday. The museum pays tribute to the calligrapher Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, who was exiled to Jeju in the 1840s. The World Natural Heritage office says about 11-hundred people were visiting each weekend day at the end of last year, which is about twice the average. The museum welcomed some 14,000 people last month, compared to just 10,000 in December 2016. The office is running a number of promotions to boost interest in the artist and his museum, including special exhibitions and allowing visitors to record their thoughts in a guestbook. 추사관 '인기'…하루 방문객 1천명 넘어 제주로 유배돼 살았던 추사 김정희를 기리기 위해 설립된 대정읍 추사관 방문객이 하루 1천 명을 넘고 있습니다. 세계유산본부는 지난해 말 추사관 주말 방문객은 하루 1천 1백여 명으로 평소보다 2배 이상 늘어났다고 밝혔습니다. 특히 지난해 12월 한달 방문객수는 1만 4천여 명으로 1년 전과 비교해 1만 명 가까이 급증했습니다. 세계유산본부는 추사 작품 전시와 추사체 방명록 쓰기 같은 다양한 홍보 체험 이벤트를 진행하고 있습니다.

First, second grade classrooms to get air purifiers Provincial education office spending \960m on initiative All of the island’s first and second grade classrooms will be outfitted with air purifiers prior to the start of the new school year in March. The provincial education office set aside 960 million won to purchase about 550 of the devices. It has also hired an outside institute to monitor air quality in the rooms from March through August to determine the efficacy of the purifiers. The education office will use the results of that study to decide whether to install purifiers in other classrooms. 초등 1·2학년 교실에 공기청정기 설치 새학기부터 제주도내 모든 초등학교 1, 2학년 교실에 공기청정기가 설치돼 운영됩니다. 제주도교육청은 지난해 추경과 국비 등 9억 6천여만원의 예산을 확보하고 초등학교 1, 2학년 교실에 공기청정기 550여 대를 설치했다고 밝혔습니다. 이와함께 오는 3월부터 8월까지 6개월동안 전문기관에 맡겨 공기청정기 운영에 따른 효용성을 검증하기로 했습니다. 교육청은 검증 결과를 종합적으로 검토해 확대 보급 여부를 결정할 방침입니다.

Governor Won Hee-ryong made the remarks during a Wednesday press conference prior to his New Year’s visit to Seogwipo. He said that once the study results are available, officials will be able to ease local conflicts by resolving compensation issues and fleshing out a development plan for the area around the new facility.   • [Anchor] This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at Singugan, the time of the year on Jeju when legend has it that it’s the best time to move and avoid any ill will from local deities. [Report] It’s that time of year again, when people on Jeju traditionally prefer to move from one home to another. Due to increased demand, they have to endure razor thin moving schedules and, of course, inflated prices. But they do it for good luck. This is Singugan, which means the time “between the old and the new.” This is a shamanistic belief related to household deities. [Slug CG] Traditionally an auspicious time to move, repair one’s home According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs, since every part of the traditional household was thought to be overseen by its own deity, moving or even doing household repairs or yard work would attract their attention and wrath. [Slug CG] Relates to shamanistic belief in household deities But during Singugan, these deities have returned to the heavens. So there are no auspicious, nor inauspicious, days during this period. This vacancy in “the divine order” means that people can go about moving without fear of a year of bad luck. [Slug CG] Solar terms: 24 astronomical or natural points The moving period is calculated using what are called “solar terms.” You can find them on any traditional East Asian lunisolar calendar. These are 24 points which correspond to an astronomical event or natural phenomenon. It sounds complicated, but it’s actually quite easy to calculate. If you have a calendar printed in Korea, look for the date on which the solar term Daehan (or “great cold”) falls, and look for the fifth day after that. This is when Singugan begins. Province seeks to host KBO All-Star Game Officials to inspect Jeju Stadium’s baseball field this month The provincial government is making its case for Jeju hosting the Korea Baseball Organization’s All-Star Game this July. Local officials visited the KBO office last week to discuss the idea. The KBO will send representatives to the island this month to inspect facilities at the Jeju Stadium’s baseball diamond before making a decision. The host city selection procedure changed in 2013. Officials dropped the requirement that a city have a professional baseball team in order to host the all-star game. 제주도, 프로야구 올스타전 유치 나서 제주도가 오는 7월 열리는 프로야구 올스타전 유치에 나섰습니다. 제주도는 지난 17일 한국야구위원회를 방문해 프로야구 올스타전 개최를 제안했다고 밝혔습니다. 이에따라 한국야구위원회는 이달 중 제주종합경기장 야구장을 답사한 후 개최 여부를 결정할 예정입니다. 프로야구 올스타전은 지난 2013년부터 개최지 결정이 공모방식으로 변경돼 프로야구단이 없는 지역에도 열리게 됐습니다.
